Air India has placed an order on Boeing Airplanes Company for acquisition of 68 new aircraft - 50 for Air India and 18 for Air India’s low budget subsidiary airline - Air India Express. The 50 aircraft ordered for Air India include eight B777-200LR Medium Capacity Ultra Long-Range aircraft; 15 B777-300ER Medium Capacity Long-Range aircraft; and 27 B787 Medium Capacity Long-Range aircraft. For Air India Express, 181-seater 18 B737-800W aircraft have been ordered.

Flights:
 
· Air India, India's international flag carrier, operates approximately 170 flights a week. Its low-
cost subsidiary, Air India Express, operates 140 services a week to 12 destinations in the Gulf
and South East Asia.
 
Developments:
 
· The first freighter operations began from June 2007on the Europe route. The freighter A 310 aircraft will make four trips in a week via Bangalore and Chennai to Frankfurt and Paris.
 
· National Aviation Company of India Ltd(NACIL) is the entity under which Air India and Indian
 are being amalgamated.
 
·The airline is expected to join star alliance in 2009.
