About Mumbai Airport:
In January 2006, the consortium led by the GVK Group, and comprising Airports Company South Africa and Bidvest, was awarded the mandate to modernise India's busiest airport, the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA), at Mumbai.
The airport has 4 terminals - 2 international and 2 domestic.
In February 2007, Mumbai International Airport Private Limited (MIAL) signed an MoU with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), the leading global IT services and consulting organization, for IT consultancy services along with implementation and management of technology at the airport. The agreement is in line with MIAL's efforts to upgrade CSIA to international standards. The scope of services covers the entire airport value chain from operations to services.
MIAL also plans to significantly improve the cargo facilities at CSIA. A new integrated cargo complex is being planned, which will be equipped to cater to all kind of goods including perishables and agri-produce. Presently, the airport handles around 400,000 tonnes of cargo annually.
With the upgrading of infrastructure, CSIA will be able to cater to passenger traffic of 40 million passengers, and handle cargo traffic of 1 million tonnes per year.
Recent Developments:
New Security Check-In Area at Terminal 1B
MIAL has opened a new security check-in area in the departure section at Terminal 1B for domestic departures. Spread over 10,000 sq. mtrs., the new section has a large holding area for passengers after security check, and airline back-room offices. The security hold area has been equipped with four x-ray machines and six gates for boarding.
New Rapid Exit Taxiway
As part of MIAL's efforts to upgrade the runway system at the CSIA, the new Rapid Exit Taxiway called India was launched in November last year. The other major activity to be accomplished was the upgrading of the runway approach lights to CAT II level.
