Chennai is the third busiest airport in India after Mumbai and Delhi airports. Among the 21 airports managed by Airports Authority of India in the South, Chennai was the most profitable airport during the year 2005-06. ChennaiAirport posted a profit of Indian Rupees 1.92 billion during 2005-06.

With industries like IT, Automotive, Telecom and Retail booming, and multinationals setting up their bases in and around Chennai, the ChennaiAirport is set to scale new heights in passenger and cargo traffic.
Recent Developments:
The aviation ministry has received the resolution passed by the Tamil Nadu Assembly, which states that the Airports Authority of India (AAI) should modernise the existing airport, and also build a greenfield one near the city.Subject to final approvals, the government is expected to invest about Indian Rupees 20 billion for the modernisation of the existing airport.As part of the long term plan, the new greenfield airport is expected to be built in a 5,000-acre area near Sriperumbudur.
