Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) is a public limited company, formed to build, own and operate the largest greenfield, private sector-owned and operated, airport in India – the Bangalore International Airport.
Bangalore currently has the fourth largest airport in India, which is amongst the fastest growing. The site of the upcoming international airport covers an area of approximately 4,000 acres. It is situated at the Highway NH7, 30 km to the north of the city. Construction of the airport began on 02 July 2005 and will continue, including the testing phase, for 33 months. The Airport is on schedule to launch operations on 02 April 2008. The total project cost of BIAL stands currently at Indian Rupees 19.30 billion. The selected partners of BIAL will invest an additional Indian Rupees 7 billion in the infrastructure.
Partners
BIAL has made substantial efforts in making sure that the professional concessionaires for the various services come on board. The following partners have been selected after an extensive technical and financial evaluation:
Aviation Fuel Facility: A consortium consisting of Skytanking and Indian Oil will build and operate the fuel farm and hydrant system of the airport on a truly open access basis. This implies that any qualified supplier of aviation turbine fuel (ATF) can supply airlines with, and process its fuel through, the common facility against a non-discriminatory and competitive charge.
Cargo Facility: Two consortia consisting of SATS / Air India and Bobba Group / Menzies Aviation will build and operate a state-of-the-art general cargo warehouse for both domestic as well as international cargo.
The combined area for both warehouses is approximately 15 acres, with an initial capacity to handle approximately 300,000 tonness of cargo.
Flight Catering: LSG Sky Chefs and Taj SATS have been selected as the flight caterers for the Airport.
Ground Handling: Consortia of Globe Ground India and Air India / Singapore Air Terminal Services (SATS) are responsible for providing ground handling services, and for procuring the ground handling equipment required for operations at the new Bangalore International Airport.
Food and Beverage Operations: HMS Host Corporation, part of the Autogrill Group, a world leader in airport dining and shopping innovations, has been awarded the contract to operate the food and beverage concessions programme at the domestic and international departures.
Retail and Duty Free: Based on the defined evaluation criteria, the consortium of Nuance/Shopper’s Stop for the Retail and Duty Free at the international departure, and Shopper’s Stop for the Retail package in the domestic departure, have been selected.
Airport Hotel: BIAL has selected the Oberoi Group to operate a first class international hotel of competitive scale and standard under the Trident Hilton brand. This truly will be the first Airport hotel in India within walking distance from the terminal building.
With the passenger traffic at the old HAL airport increasing from 2.3 million in 2001 to approximately 5 million in 2005, BIAL appointed LHC once more in 2005 to update the traffic forecast and develop planning parameters.
