About Hyderabad Airport:
In 2000, GMR bagged the contract to build India's first Public PrivatePartnership greenfield airport at India's southern city of Hyderabad. The airport is spread across 5,500 acres in Shamshabad, located 25 km from the city centre of Hyderabad.
GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd. is a public-private joint venture between the GMR Group, Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad, the State Government of Andhra Pradesh and the Airports Authority of India (AAI). The GMR Group holds 63% of the equity, MAHB 11%, while the Government of Andhra Pradesh and Airports Authority of India each hold 13%.
The airport capacity has been increased to handle 12 million passengers and 100,000 tonnes of cargo annually. In the final stage, it will cater to over 40 million passengers per annum and 1 million tonne of cargo. With a runway length of 4,260 metres and a width of 75 meters, it will be able to handle wide-body aircraft like the A-350 and the A-380. It boasts of India's longest runway and taxiway (4620m).
Recent Developments:
The airport has completed its trial runs successfully and commenced commercial operations by 0001 hrs of March 23, 2008.
The third party maintenance, repair & overhaul (MRO) facility coming up at the new airport is expected to be the driving force for the aviation business at Hyderabad.
GHIAL has a 45% stake in the MRO business, while the remaining stake is held by Lufthansa Technik AG. The initial investment is estimated at Indian Rupees 1 billion. This apart, GHIAL has also awarded the concession agreement for the MRO facility to a joint venture of Indian Air lines and Air lndia.
